アテネからカイロに飛行機が着陸すると皆拍手した。カイロについたのは夜で空港を出るとホテルの看板をもった人たちがその中の一軒に決めてチエックインするとボーイが荷物を持ち部屋まで来るがチップをやらないと出てゆかなかった。この日は寝る。次の日はタラットハルビストリートで安宿を探す。オックスフォードペンションが安いらしい。イギリス人の男性が僕を見てオックスフォードペンションに連れて行ってくれた。オックスフォードペンションにはビールもあったしチャイなども注文できた。とりあえず次はイエローフィーバーとコレラの予防注射を受けるところを探した。それからスーダンとケニヤのビザを取る間アスワンに向けて出発するまでオックスフォードペンションで過ごす。何人か日本人も来た。食事は安かった。キャメルマーケットやギゼのピラミッドに行った。予防注射やビザが取れたらアスワンに向けて列車に乗った。
